Following the success of our previous Anti-Money Laundering Training for Solicitors course held in Belfast, Compliance Ireland will hold further Anti-Money Laundering Training Courses for Northern Irish Solicitors at the Europa Hotel (from 6-9pm) on various evenings in 2008.

As practising solicitors will be well aware, the money laundering obligations imposed upon them, especially the requirement to report suspicious activity, is a very topical issue facing United Kingdom legal practitioners.

Each evening's training will examine the Guidance issued by the Law Society of England & Wales to explain, in practical terms, the key Anti-Money Laundering issues, in particular:

1. Your legal obligations as solicitors – under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, Terrorism Act 2000, the Money Laundering Regulations 2007, Guidance Notes & the Third EU Money Laundering Directive;

2. The steps to take to meet your obligations – determining what is satisfactory evidence of identity for different types of natural and legal persons, exemptions, introduction certificates, initial and ongoing KYC responsibilities, record-keeping, how to evidence your compliance with the legislation; and

3. Problems faced by solicitors – identifying & reporting suspicious activity, confidentiality & privilege, what to do after a report has been made, the “tipping-off” offence, civil liability, constructive trusteeship, P v P & instances where solicitors have been prosecuted for failing to report suspicious activity.
